Dangi Folk Music: Song Traditions of South Gujarat's Forests
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
The Dang district adjacent to Valsad shares the tribal musical traditions of the Dangi Bhil community, which also extends into the forested areas of Valsad district. Dangi folk music is characterised by the tarpa, a large circular wind instrument made from dried gourd and bamboo pipe. The tarpa produces a continuous drone over which lead melodies are woven; its playing technique requires circular breathing for uninterrupted sound. Tarpa music accompanies the tarpa dance, a circular community dance at festivals and weddings. The music style uses pentatonic scales with characteristic ornaments and microtonal inflections. Dangi songs describe agricultural seasons, forest life, ancestor stories, and love. The Dang Darbar (tribal gathering) held by the British colonial administration as a pacification measure became an annual festival that is now a major platform for Dangi cultural performance. The tarpa was declared an instrument of national heritage significance by the Sangeet Natak Akademi.
