Chikoo (Sapodilla) Cultivation in Valsad: South Gujarat's Sweet Fruit

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Valsad district is one of India's major producers of chikoo (sapodilla, Manilkara zapota), a brown-skinned tropical fruit with sweet grainy flesh grown extensively in coastal and riverine areas. Chikoo was introduced to India from Central America in the 18th century and has found an ideal home in south Gujarat's humid coastal climate. Valsad's Gholvad and Bulsar taluka are particularly famous for their chikoo orchards, with thousands of hectares under cultivation. Trees are large and productive, bearing fruit year-round in continuous cycles. Traditional varieties include Kalipatti, Dwarapudi, and Cricket Ball, each with different size and flavour profiles. Chikoo harvest is done manually by climbing trees or using long-handled picking tools. Fruit is sold fresh at local markets and to Mumbai wholesale markets. Chikoo wood is also valued for furniture and carving due to its hardness and fine grain.
