Apple Cultivation in Uttarkashi: High-Altitude Horticulture

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Uttarkashi district's high-altitude valleys (1,800-3,000m) are prime apple-growing territory, with the fruit emerging as a transformative cash crop for hill communities. The Bhagirath valley from Uttarkashi to Gangotri and the Yamuna valley around Barkot are the main apple growing zones. Royal Delicious, Red Delicious, and Golden Delicious varieties dominate production. Apple cultivation, introduced in Uttarakhand hills in the 1960s by progressive farmers following the Himachal Pradesh model, has proved economically superior to traditional cereals on steeply terraced hillside plots. Modern high-density planting with trellis systems and drip irrigation is replacing traditional low-density orchards. The cold storage infrastructure at Uttarkashi town allows fruit to be held 1-2 months beyond harvest, smoothing price curves. Women perform the critical thinning, spraying, and picking work in most orchard households.
