Siddhaganga Math and Free Food (Dasoha) Tradition of Tumkur

The Siddhaganga Mutt in Tumkur is one of Karnataka's most venerated Veerashaiva institutions, founded in the 15th century and made internationally famous by Dr. Shivakumara Swamiji, who served as pontiff from 1941 to 2019 and ran a free school, hostel, and food programme (Dasoha) for children from the poorest families. At its peak, the Mutt fed over 8,000 students three meals daily, entirely funded through donations and run through student self-service. The Mutt's education system, following the ancient gurukulam tradition, taught academic subjects alongside ethical values, vocational skills, and physical training. The Dasoha model — providing food, shelter, and education without discrimination — is considered one of the most successful grassroots social welfare programmes in Karnataka's history.
