Gamit Tribal Music Traditions of Tapi

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

The Gamit tribe, one of south Gujarat's major scheduled tribes concentrated in Tapi district, has a rich musical tradition centred on seasonal agricultural festivals and community religious observances. Gamit music uses the tadko (double-headed drum), turi (long straight bronze trumpet), and pavo (bamboo flute) as primary instruments. The characteristic Gamit dance (shela nrritya) involves coordinated stick-dance by young men in traditional dress, performed at Holi and harvest festivals. Gamit wedding music follows a precisely choreographed sequence of songs and instrumental pieces from the bride's departure to the groom's home, with each stage marked by specific musical forms. Community singing of devotional songs (bhajans) to local deity Vagdh Mata is accompanied by the dhol and manjira. Gamit oral literature includes creation myths, clan genealogies (vansavali), and heroic narratives transmitted by bhat (bard) families associated with specific Gamit clans.
