Suryapet Khadi Gramodyog Ambar Charkha Cotton Telangana

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Suryapet district in Telangana is home to Khadi Gramodyog Bhavan spinning and weaving units established under Mahatma Gandhi's constructive programme in the 1930s-1940s in Kodad and Suryapet towns, where spinners on Ambar multi-spindle charkha wheels produce khadi cotton yarn from locally ginned Telangana cotton for weaving into khadi cloth for institutional supply and village retail. Suryapet khadi units are registered with the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) and produce both cotton khadi and cotton-silk blended khadi fabric. Spinners — predominantly women from Padmashali, Kosta, and OBC artisan communities — earn piece-rate wages under KVIC's productivity-linked rebate system that subsidises consumer retail pricing and sales through Khadi India outlets in Hyderabad and Vijayawada. Festival seasons generate production drives for Independence Day, Gandhi Jayanti, and Ugadi, with institutional purchases by government departments for khadi uniform cloth representing a guaranteed annual order. The Suryapet KVIC units also operate allied village industries including handmade paper production and coir doormat weaving as complementary livelihoods for unit members.
