Coriander Cultivation in Sawai Madhopur: A Spice Heartland

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Sawai Madhopur district is part of Rajasthan's coriander belt, which collectively produces a significant share of India's national coriander output. Farmers sow the RCr-41 and RCr-728 varieties in October on well-drained sandy loam soils. The crop matures in February-March and is harvested by hand to prevent seed shattering. After drying on threshing floors, coriander seeds are cleaned and bagged for the Kota and Ramganj Mandi commodity market, Asia's largest spice trading hub. Green coriander leaves (dhania) are sold fresh at local vegetable markets throughout winter. Traditional seed treatment with cow dung slurry before sowing is practiced alongside newer fungicide treatments. Coriander essential oil extracted from seeds is used in pharmaceuticals and cosmetics, creating a value-addition opportunity that farmer producer organisations (FPOs) are beginning to explore.
