Panna Diamond Mines and Gemstone Heritage near Satna Vindhya
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Satna district borders the Panna diamond-bearing belt, part of the Vindhyan geological sequence. The Majhgawan pipe near Panna is Asia only significant diamond-producing kimberlite pipe still in operation. Traditional alluvial diamond mining in the Ken River bed has been practiced for centuries by local Kol and Dhobi communities using simple sieves and gravity separation. Historically, Satna traders were intermediaries in the diamond trade between Panna miners and Surat and Jaipur cutting centres. The traditional sieve — a woven bamboo dish called a tokni — is still used by independent miners permitted to work in restricted zone concessions. Satna markets historically featured rough gemstone trading alongside agricultural commodities, a pattern that continues in smaller scale at gem trading shops in the city centre.
