Sangrur Khes Striped Cotton Weaving Malwa
Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team
Khes is a traditional Punjabi double-cloth bedsheet woven on pit looms in Sangrur's weaving villages by Julaha Muslim weaver families and their Hindu counterparts, using coarse handspun cotton warp and weft in contrasting checks and stripes. The double weave structure produces a reversible fabric that is warm in winter and absorbent in summer, making khes the traditional sleeping sheet and sitting cloth in Punjab homes. Sangrur district, particularly villages near Lehragaga and Dirba, has clusters of khes weavers who supply wholesale dealers in Ludhiana and Delhi handloom markets.
