Rohtak Charpoy Weaving Manjha Cotton Cord
Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team
The charpoy, the traditional Indian woven-cord bed, is made in Rohtak's villages by communities who weave manjha cotton or nylon cord on wooden frames using a figure-eight crossing technique that creates a resilient sleeping surface that adapts to body weight. Village craftsmen in Rohtak and surrounding Haryana make charpoys to order for households, producing them in standard sizes with different cord colours and weave densities for summer (loose open weave) and winter use. The charpoy remains indispensable in rural Haryana as the primary household furniture item for sleeping, sitting, and community gathering in courtyards, and craftsmen who repair old charpoy cord are supported by steady demand.
