Patachitra Scroll Painting Midnapore Medinipur West Bengal

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Patachitra scroll painting (pata = cloth, chitra = picture) of West Bengal is the narrative tradition of the Chitrakar caste community of Midnapore and Birbhum districts who create long horizontal scroll paintings depicting mythological, social, and contemporary stories that are unrolled sequentially while the artist-singer (chitrakar) sings the narrative. Unlike Odisha Pattachitra which is a static framed panel, Bengal Patachitra is an unrolling story performance: each panel reveals as the chitrakar sings. Traditional themes include Manasa (serpent goddess), Yama and the soul, Durga Puja scenes, and folktale narratives. Contemporary Chitrakar artists have added social commentary narratives — HIV awareness, child marriage, environment — commissioned by NGOs as illustrated song-story educational tools. Bengal Patachitra is on the UNESCO Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Patachitra cooperatives in Naya village near Pingla in Midnapore have become a craft tourism destination with artisan studios open to visitors. Export to European folk art collectors and to NGO and educational buyers. National Crafts Awards recipients in this tradition have produced works collected internationally.
