Panipat Three Battles Historic Battlefield Heritage

Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team

Panipat was the site of three defining battles of Indian history: the First Battle of 1526 where Babur defeated Ibrahim Lodi founding the Mughal Empire, the Second Battle of 1556 where Akbar's forces defeated Hemu, and the Third Battle of 1761 where Ahmad Shah Durrani defeated the Maratha Confederacy. The Kala Amb memorial garden in Panipat city marks the Third Battle site, and the Hemu memorial, Babur's mosque, and Ibrahim Lodi's tomb are protected monuments around the city. Panipat's battlefields are a destination for heritage tourism and history education tours, with the city hosting an annual Kala Amb Mela commemorating the 1761 battle.
