North 24 Parganas Jute Mill Basirhat Prawn Farming

Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team

North 24 Parganas district, stretching from Kolkata's northern suburbs to the Bangladesh border, contains the greatest concentration of jute mills in the world along the Hooghly river bank (Titagarh, Barrackpore, Bhatpara, Naihati) — a legacy of the colonial jute economy that powered Bengal's industrial labour force in the 19th-20th century. Basirhat subdivision in North 24 Parganas is a significant saltwater prawn (bagda) aquaculture area where tidal bheris (enclosed brine pans) have been converted from salt production to bagda shrimp cultivation for export to the EU, Japan, and the US. The district borders Bangladesh along the Ichhamati river, and the Bagda-Hasnabad border area has historical significance as a migration pathway for Partition-era refugees who settled the district's wetland margins.
