Nizamabad Turmeric Market and Haldi Cultivation Heritage
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Nizamabad district is one of Telangana's largest turmeric-producing regions, with the Nizamabad turmeric market operating as a major price-setting auction centre for the Deccan turmeric belt. Local farmers grow Erode Local, Rajapuri, and Waigon varieties on black cotton soil using Godavari canal water for irrigation. Turmeric rhizomes are harvested after 8–9 months, boiled or steamed for curing, sun-dried for 2–3 weeks, and then polished to produce the bright yellow marketed product. Community growers' federations manage collective drying platforms and marketing.
