Nawanshahr Kandi Shivalik Ecology Dryland Belt

Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team

Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar (Nawanshahr) district's northern quarter falls in the Kandi sub-montane belt where the Shivalik hills transition to the Punjab plains, creating an ecologically distinctive zone of seasonal streams called chaoes, bhabar gravel soils, and natural scrub forest with Dalbergia sissoo, Acacia catechu, and Saccharum spontaneum grasslands. The Kandi belt's fragile ecology is managed through soil and water conservation earthworks — check dams, contour bunds, and vegetative barriers — under the Kandi Area Development and Watershed Project that has restored degraded land and improved groundwater recharge. Native wildlife including blue bull, hog deer, and jungle fowl survive in the Kandi scrub.
