Coal Miner Community Food Culture and Cooperative Tradition, Mancherial

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

The mining communities of Mancherial have developed distinctive food traditions reflecting the physical demands of coal mining. High-calorie, sustaining foods dominate the miner diet — thick ragi or jowar mudda (ball), served with spiced lentil sambar, provides sustained energy for underground shifts. Miners' wives traditionally prepare tiffin carriers (multi-tier stainless steel containers) that are delivered to the mine entrance at shift change. The Singareni Workers' Cooperative runs subsidised canteens at mine sites providing nutritious meals at minimal cost. The mining community's food culture has created a hybrid cuisine blending Telugu, Odia, and Marathi influences from the diverse origins of the migrant mining workforce.
