Mahasamund Gariaband Mahua Rice Paddy Tribal Farming

Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team

Mahasamund and Gariaband districts on the Odisha border in eastern Chhattisgarh grow fine-grain indigenous paddy varieties — Dubraj, Vishnu Bhog, and Jeeraphool aromatic rice — on the plateau alluvium, with Dubraj rice earning GI status for its distinctive aroma and texture prized in Chhattisgarhi households and urban restaurants across India. Gariaband district's Udanti-Sitanadi Tiger Reserve is one of the few areas in India where the wild buffalo (Bos arnee) — ancestor of domestic buffalo — still survives in a semi-wild herd that roams the Udanti forest. The mahua tree is central to Mahasamund's tribal economy, with Gond and Halba households depending on the April mahua harvest for cash income and the fermented flower liquor for ceremonial consumption.
