Leheriya Wave Dye Fabric Jaipur Rajasthan

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Leheriya is a diagonal wave-striped tie-dye fabric technique practiced in Jaipur, Sikar, and Nagaur districts of Rajasthan, where Chippa community dyers create multi-colour wave patterns by tightly rolling cotton or silk fabric on a diagonal and binding at intervals before dipping in colour baths. The rolled resist technique creates chevron and diagonal stripe patterns in vivid combinations of saffron, green, pink, and yellow that have been associated with Rajasthan festival dress for centuries. Leheriya odhni (headscarf) and saree are worn at Teej and Gangaur festivals. The GI tag covers Jaipur Leheriya. Contemporary adaptations of leheriya in light chiffon and georgette fabric for urban fashion markets have expanded the product range. Cooperative dyers in Sanganer and Bagru supply leheriya fabric to Jaipur fashion exporters and emporium stores.
