Khadi Sabarmati Ashram Gandhi Gujarat

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad, established by Mahatma Gandhi in 1917, became the centre of the Swadeshi movement's most powerful symbol — the spinning of khadi. Gandhi's spinning wheel (charkha) represented economic self-reliance, rejection of British mill cloth, and cottage industry revival. Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) today supports 50 lakh artisans across India. Sabarmati ashram has been preserved as a national monument and Khadi Gramodyog products continue to support rural weavers.
