Sahiwal Cow — Punjab's Indigenous A2 Dairy Breed

Contributed by System

Sahiwal, bred in Montgomery district (now Pakistan) and conserved in Ferozepur and Ludhiana, Punjab, is India's highest milk-producing indigenous Zebu breed, averaging 2,500 litres per lactation. Its milk contains A2 beta-casein, associated with easier digestion, and commands a 30–50% premium in urban markets. Punjab Gaushalas run Sahiwal conservation programmes to prevent the breed's displacement by Holstein-Friesian hybrids.
