Katihar Ganga Mahananda Confluence Fishery Bihar
Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team
Katihar district at the confluence of the Ganga and Mahananda rivers in Bihar's far east is an important freshwater fishery zone where Mallah fishing communities operate drift nets, stake nets, and coracle boats to catch hilsa, catla, rohu, singhara, and tengra fish in the river confluence's productive mixing zone. Katihar is also a major railway junction — the meeting point of northeastern rail lines to Assam and the main Kolkata-Delhi trunk — and its wholesale market handles trade in rice, jute, and fish from the surrounding delta districts. The district's Barari Ghat on the Ganga confluence is a significant Chhath Puja site where lakhs of devotees gather for the sunrise arghya offering.
