Karnal Basmati Rice Cooperative Haryana

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Karnal in the Karnal district of Haryana is the research and production hub of Indian basmati rice, home to the National Research Centre on Plant Biotechnology where high-yielding basmati varieties including Pusa Basmati 1121, Pusa Basmati 1509, and Taraori basmati were developed. The Karnal-Kurukshetra belt accounts for a large share of India basmati export volumes shipped annually to the Middle East, Europe, and North America. The HAFED Haryana State Cooperative Supply Federation procures basmati from member farmer cooperatives and sells through export houses. Karnal basmati is distinguished by long extra-long grain length of eight to nine millimetres after cooking and a characteristic scent from 2-acetyl-1-pyrroline aroma compound. GI registration as Indian Basmati protects these varieties from imitations. Paddy cultivation in Karnal uses canal irrigation from the Western Yamuna Canal and tube wells drawing from the Gangetic aquifer.
