Karauli Lal Patthar: Red Sandstone Carving Tradition
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Karauli district is famous for its distinctive lal patthar (red sandstone), quarried from the Vindhyan rock formations around the town. The stone's warm crimson colour, fine grain, and workability have made it prized for temple construction and decorative carving across Rajasthan for over a thousand years. Stone carvers (shilpkar) from the Kumhar and Nat communities produce intricately latticed jaali screens, ornamental brackets (braketts), figurative friezes, and column capitals. The Kaila Devi temple complex, a major pilgrimage site in Karauli, exemplifies the red sandstone architectural tradition with its carved spires and mandapa pillars. Modern workshops produce items ranging from garden statuary to temple elements exported to Hindu diaspora communities in the USA and UK. Apprenticeship under master craftsmen begins in childhood, with children learning to read traditional design manuals (shilpa shastras).
