Jaintia Hills (East and West Jaintia Hills districts) in eastern Meghalaya is the homeland of the Pnar (Jaintia) people — another matrilineal Khasi sub-group — whose major economic assets are the large coal reserves (lignite and sub-bituminous) and limestone/dolomite quarries that supply raw material to cement plants. The Jaintia Hills' Jowai market is a weekly tribal trade fair where Pnar women sell woven textiles, betel nut, and agricultural produce. The district's Krang Shuri waterfall and the Thadlaskein Lake are natural landmarks. Jaintia handloom produces distinctive check-pattern silk and cotton fabrics worn as traditional dress. The Teer (archery) gambling tradition of Meghalaya — where state-licensed archery competitions determine betting outcomes — is most active in Jaintia Hills.
