Bhedaghat Marble Rocks and the Narmada Gorge of Jabalpur
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
At Bhedaghat near Jabalpur, the Narmada River cuts through towering white marble cliffs rising 30 metres above the water. This geological wonder has been sacred for millennia, with Chausath Yogini temple perched at the gorge entrance. Boatmen have navigated this passage for centuries, reading water currents by the colour and sound of rocks. The marble itself is quarried by local Vishwakarma artisans who fashion idols, pillars, and inlay work prized across central India. Dhuandhar Falls marks where the Narmada plunges 15 metres in a cloud of spray, creating a perpetual mist that sustains rare ferns and mosses on the cliff face. The river here is worshipped as mother, with Narmada Jayanti celebrated with floating diyas and community feasts.
