Kasauli Brewery: Asia's Oldest Operational Distillery Heritage

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

The Kasauli Brewery established in 1820 by Edward Dyer in the Solan hills claims the distinction of being Asia's oldest surviving operational distillery. The original Scottish methodology adapted to local barley and mountain water has produced Solan whisky for over 200 years. The cool mountain climate, pure Himalayan water sources, and traditional distillation methods using century-old copper pot stills create distinctive spirits. The distillery complex represents Victorian industrial heritage in a mountain setting. Traditional barley cultivation supporting the distillery involves local farmers who have maintained barley varieties suited to the Himachali climate. The site preserves industrial archaeology demonstrating early colonial enterprise adaptation to mountain environments.
