Paonta Sahib Gurudwara and Yamuna Heritage Sirmaur

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Paonta Sahib on the Yamuna river in Sirmaur district is a major Sikh pilgrimage site where Guru Gobind Singh lived for four years (1685-1688) and completed the Dasam Granth. The historic Gurudwara built where the Guru resided and wrote maintains his memory through daily religious observance. The nearby Yamuna river at this point is relatively clean as it descends from the Himalayan foothills, and sacred river bathing is an important pilgrimage practice. The town has developed as a pilgrimage and educational centre. Traditional crafts supported by Gurudwara patronage include printing, bookbinding, and cloth preparation for religious uses. The langar at Paonta Sahib Gurudwara provides free meals to thousands of pilgrims and visitors daily.
