Shivalik Wildlife Corridor and Forest Ecology Bilaspur
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Bilaspur district's Shivalik forests form part of an important wildlife corridor connecting the Morni Hills in Haryana with higher Himachal Pradesh ranges. Leopard, Sambar deer, wild boar, and diverse bird species use these forests. The forest-lake interface around Gobind Sagar creates unique habitat diversity attracting waterbirds including migratory species. Traditional forest communities in Bilaspur maintain knowledge of wildlife presence, behaviour, and seasonal movement patterns. Van Panchayat forests managed by communities protect biodiversity while providing regulated forest product access. Conservation challenges include human-wildlife conflict around forest fringes where agricultural fields border wildlife habitat. Community-based monitoring programs train local youth in wildlife observation contributing to baseline ecological data.
