Godda Rajmahal Hills Stone Carving Craft
Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team
The Rajmahal hills sandstone in Godda and adjacent Sahebganj district has been carved into building blocks, grinding stones, and decorative architectural elements by communities of stone workers (patthar mistri) whose craft tradition precedes Mughal-era mosque and dargah construction in the Bengal Subah. Village stone-workers in Godda dress sandstone into doorframes, steps, and grinding querns using iron chisels and hand hammers passed through apprenticeship traditions. Rajmahal sandstone's warm buff colour and uniform texture made it the building material of choice for Mughal Bengal's riverside trading towns and mosques visible in Godda and Sahebganj riverbank heritage structures.
