Eri Silk — Ahimsa Silk of Assam, Non-Violent Weaving

Contributed by System

Eri silk (from Samia ricini silkworm) is unique because the cocoon is open-ended — the moth emerges before reeling, making it ahimsa (non-violent) silk. Assam's Goalpara, Dhubri, and Kamrup districts are primary producers. The open cocoons cannot be reeled in continuous filament; instead, cut cocoons are carded and spun like cotton. Fabric is thick, warm, and takes natural dyes well. Traditional Eri mekhela chadors and shawls are prized for durability. Growing demand from eco-conscious European buyers has pushed up prices. KVIC and NEC fund Eri rearing extension programmes in village clusters.
