Bobbattu — Dal and Jaggery Flatbread Sweet of Eluru Region
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Bobbattu (also known as Puran Poli or Obattu in other regions) is a sweet flatbread prepared in Eluru and West Godavari during Ugadi (Telugu New Year), Holi, and major religious festivals. The filling is prepared by cooking chana dal (split chickpea) until soft, then mashing with jaggery, cardamom, and nutmeg. This sweet dal mixture is wrapped in a fine wheat flour dough and rolled flat before being cooked on a hot griddle with generous ghee. The West Godavari version of Bobbattu is distinguished by the addition of Coconut milk poured over the freshly cooked bread, which adds richness and moisture. Families in the delta region prepare Bobbattu in large quantities during festivals, distributing to neighbours as a community food-sharing practice.
