Dhanbad Coal Mining Jharia Coalfield Heritage

Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team

Dhanbad district hosts the Jharia coalfield, India's most important coking coal reserve with over 19 billion tonnes of proven reserves, and is the epicentre of coal mining in eastern India with Bharat Coking Coal Limited operating dozens of underground and opencast mines. The Jharia coalfield has been burning underground for over 100 years — spontaneous coal fires ignite in abandoned mines and spread through coal seams, creating one of the world's longest-burning underground fires that has forced village relocation and created a surreal landscape of smoke vents and subsidence craters. Dhanbad's mining culture, with its distinct IIT(ISM) institution, colliery housing colonies, and coalminer folk songs (koyla geet), forms a unique industrial heritage within Jharkhand's tribal landscape.
