Dahi Handi Govinda Festival Thane Mumbai Maharashtra

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Dahi Handi is the Janmashtami festival tradition of Maharashtra in which teams of young men (Govinda) form human pyramids 8-9 storeys tall (up to 40 feet) to break a clay pot (matki) of curd suspended on a rope above the street. The tradition celebrates Krishna stealing butter (dahi) as a child. In Mumbai and Thane, thousands of Govinda troupes compete across hundreds of handi events, with prize money reaching crores of rupees. The competitive Govinda circuit trains young men in acrobatics, team-building, and physical fitness year-round. Cooperative Govinda mandals in Worli and Lalbaug provide training, sponsorship, and welfare to working-class youth who participate, many of whom are construction workers and mill workers.
