Srikalahasti Kalamkari Pen Painting Craft of Chittoor

Srikalahasti in Chittoor district is one of India's two principal Kalamkari centres — specifically for the kalam (pen) style, as distinct from Machilipatnam's block-printing tradition. Srikalahasti Kalamkari artists use a bamboo pen (kalam) dipped in fermented natural mordant solutions to hand-draw intricate designs on mordant-treated cotton cloth. The designs are primarily religious — depicting Hindu temple deities, mythological scenes, and devotional imagery in a bold, expressive line style. Natural dyes from pomegranate, tamarind seeds, indigo, and iron-tannin combinations are applied sequentially with mordanting and washing between each colour. A single large Kalamkari panel may take 2–3 months to complete. Srikalahasti Kalamkari has a GI tag and is collected internationally as a fine art textile tradition.
