Dollu Kunitha Drum Dance Tradition of Chikkaballapur
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Dollu Kunitha is Karnataka's most energetic folk dance form, performed by the Kuruba community using large cylindrical drums (dollu) strapped to the performers' bodies and beaten while dancing vigorous steps. The dance features rapid formations, synchronized drumming patterns, and acrobatic movements — performers spin, form human pyramids, and beat complex polyrhythmic patterns simultaneously. Chikkaballapur district's Kuruba communities maintain strong Dollu Kunitha troupes that perform at the annual Dasara celebrations, Rajyotsava events, and local temple festivals. Each troupe's repertoire includes multiple rhythmic compositions (taala patterns) and formation sequences that distinguish their style. The Karnataka Janapada Academy actively supports Dollu Kunitha training and performance.
