Bhil Tribal Painting Alirajpur Jhabua Madhya Pradesh

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Bhil tribal paintings from Alirajpur and Jhabua districts of Madhya Pradesh, created by the Bhil community who also extend into Rajasthan and Gujarat, are characterised by vibrant pointillist dot-painting technique (pithora-like but with distinct Bhil animal-narrative style) using natural pigments. Bhil artists paint village life, hunting scenes, and mythological narratives on walls, cloth, and paper using tiny dots applied with a stick tip to build up figures and scenes. Bhil painting cooperatives in Alirajpur and Jhabua market artwork through Craft Mark certification and urban design studios. Bhil artists have gained national recognition at the India Art Fair and international galleries in London and Paris. Cooperative training programmes help Bhil women become self-employed artists.
