Korku Gavri Dance and Satpura Music Tradition of Betul

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Korku tribal communities of Betul perform the Gavri dance as their primary ritual performance, linked to the Shiva-Parvati mythology in a tribal interpretation. The Gavri cycle involves multiple characters performed by community men over several weeks — demon figures, comic characters, and the presiding Mahadev. The performance circuit visits each household in the village as a blessing ritual. Music uses the dhol drum, mandar, and a flute called the algoza — double-pipe instrument producing a drone and melody simultaneously. Korku songs for harvest, cattle care, and naming ceremonies maintain a linguistic vocabulary that scholars of Munda languages consider archaic, preserving ancient phonological features lost in other branches. Betul district cultural department has organised Korku cultural festivals to provide performance platforms and document the tradition.
