Bareilly district in the Rohilkhand region of northern UP is the "Chair City of India" — the district produces 50% of India's wooden furniture through a cluster of 3,000+ furniture units in the Nainital Road and Pilibhit Bypass industrial areas, exporting teak and shisham furniture to the Gulf, EU, and domestic markets. Bareilly's zardozi (gold-thread embroidery) tradition — elaborate metallic thread embroidery on silk and velvet producing decorative panels, evening gowns, and blouse pieces — employs thousands of Muslim Kashmiri and local craftsmen. The district's bareilly surmai (Rohilkhand antimony kohl) is a traditional eye cosmetic prepared from antimony sulfide and mixed with clarified butter, sold in decorative containers at Bareilly's Sufiyan bazaar.
