Andaman Karen Sea Nomad Reef Fishing Traditional

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

The Karen community of Andaman Islands are descendants of Burmese immigrants brought by the British colonial administration who have preserved traditional sea-nomad fishing knowledge across Wandur, Little Andaman, and Havelock Island coastal areas. Karen fishers use handbuilt long-tail outboard boats, handmade cane fish traps, and seasonal hand-line techniques to harvest reef fish, lobster, and crab without destroying coral structure. The community co-manages marine protected zones with the Andaman and Nicobar Forest Department, having voluntarily excluded large-mesh gill nets from designated reef conservation areas. Karen women process dried fish using traditional salt-smoking techniques on coconut shell fuel that imparts a distinctive flavour. Cooperative ecotourism guides trained under the National Fisheries Development Board connect Karen fishing traditions with Andaman snorkelling tourism circuits, providing supplementary income.
