Anantnag Kashmir Walnut Wood Carving Cooperative
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Anantnag district in Kashmir Valley is a centre of walnut wood carving, with workshops in Khanmoh, Haripora, and Kulgam producing elaborately carved furniture, bowls, and decorative panels from black walnut timber. Kashmir walnut carving tradition developed under Mughal patronage and employs deeply undercut floral and bird motifs in pure relief and deep relief styles on walnut slabs. Cooperative carving workshops supply through Kashmiri emporium chains in Delhi and directly to export buyers in Germany, USA, and Gulf. Cooperative wage standards prevent the worst piece-rate underpayment. Walnut timber supply has tightened as old trees mature and young plantation walnut is harvested before peak quality. Cooperative artisans in Anantnag have begun sourcing rehabilitated walnut logs from government forest cooperatives.
