Tiatr Konkani Musical Theater Goa

Tiatr is the popular Konkani-language musical theater form of Goa, performed by Catholic Goan communities, developed in the late 19th century by Lucasinho Ribeiro as an adaptation of the Portuguese theatrical tradition to Goan cultural themes. Tiatr performances combine spoken drama scenes (tanki) alternating with songs called cantaram sung in Konkani, Portuguese, and occasionally Hindi, addressing themes of rural Goan life, emigration to the Gulf and Portugal, social problems, and political satire. A standard Tiatr lasts four to five hours and includes eight to twelve cantaram solos performed by male and female singers in front of painted canvas backdrops. The performance style is deliberately accessible: jokes are in dialect, songs are melodramatic, and audience participation through voting for best cantaram singer (by tossing money on stage) is expected. Famous Tiatr personalities include Purushottam Walavalkar, M. Boyer, and Tomazinho Cardozo who popularized the form in the 1930s to 1990s. Tiatr is performed in parish halls, municipal grounds, and the Kala Academy Goa. The Tiatr Academy of Goa was established in 2007 to support performers, script archiving, and training of new performers. Approximately 40 to 50 active Tiatr companies operate in Goa, North Goa being the center, performing a circuit of 100 to 200 shows per year.
