Salem Steel Plant Mango Silk Weaving Tamil Nadu

Salem district is the site of SAIL's Salem Steel Plant — the country's only integrated steel plant specialising in stainless steel and flat products — alongside its traditional industries of Salem silk (a distinct sari tradition), Salem Silk saris with self-coloured checked pattern, and the "Salem Manga" (Mango) — a prized small mango variety sold at Salem's Mango market which is one of the largest in South India. The Seetharaman variety mango from Salem fetches premium prices for its sweet-sour taste, and the Salem mango market handles 500-600 tonnes daily at peak season. Salem's silkworm rearing on mulberry in the Omalur and Salem blocks links to Kancheepuram and Arni silk weaving through raw silk supply.
