Prayagraj Triveni Sangam Kumbh Mela Ritual Bathing Uttar Pradesh

Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh is the site of the Triveni Sangam — the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical underground Saraswati — which is the holiest bathing point in Hinduism and the anchor of the Kumbh Mela, the world's largest religious gathering held every twelve years on a cycle determined by Jupiter's position in Aquarius. Ritual bathing at the Sangam on auspicious dates called Shahi Snan draws tens of millions of pilgrims who believe the convergence of rivers creates amrit-charged water capable of washing away lifetimes of karmic debt. Akharas of Naga Sadhus lead processions on the principal bathing days, with the sequence of procession rights negotiated centuries ago through the Panchayati Akhara system and adjudicated by the Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad. The 2019 Ardh Kumbh drew an estimated 240 million visitors over 49 days and was recognised by UNESCO and the Guinness Book of Records as the world's largest peaceful human gathering. Local boat families of the Mallah community have managed Sangam ferry services across generations and hold exclusive rights to the ghat approach.
