Tuljapur Tuljabhavani Temple: Sacred Architecture of Osmanabad
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
The Tuljabhavani temple at Tuljapur in Osmanabad district is one of Maharashtra's three and a half Shakti Peethas (sacred seats of Goddess Bhavani) and among the most visited pilgrimage sites in the Deccan. The deity Tuljabhavani is the kul-devi (clan deity) of the Bhosle royal family — Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj himself worshipped here before his campaigns. The temple complex, built substantially during the Yadava and Maratha periods, features a black stone deity image with the goddess in Mahishasuramardini form. The architecture shows the Hemadpanthi style with carved exterior walls, a sabha mandapa, and a deep underground well. The annual Navratri fair at Tuljapur draws millions of pilgrims from across Maharashtra, Telangana, and Karnataka. Hereditary priest (bhat) families maintain ritual services. The temple trust's income supports schools, hospitals, and infrastructure in Osmanabad district.
