Navara Ayurvedic Medicinal Rice Palakkad Kerala
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Navara rice (Oryza sativa var. Navara) is a traditional short-duration variety cultivated in Palakkad and Thrissur districts of Kerala with documented medicinal properties recognized in classical Ayurvedic texts including the Ashtanga Hridayam. The grain is small, reddish-brown, and produces a distinctive nutty fragrance on cooking. Navara matures in 60 to 75 days — among the shortest-duration rice varieties in the world — and is traditionally grown as a kharif crop in paddy-field lowlands or as an intercrop in coconut gardens on laterite upland. In Ayurvedic medicine Navara is used in Navarakizhi therapeutic massage: cooked navara rice is bundled in cloth and the warm bundle dipped in medicated milk is massaged over the body to nourish tissues (dhatu), relieve rheumatism, and strengthen muscle in post-operative recovery and infant massage. This application drives high-value demand from Ayurvedic hospitals and resorts in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and abroad. Kerala Agricultural University variety KAU Navara, selected from traditional landrace, maintains medicinal phytochemical profile with improved yield. Cultivation is predominantly in Chittur and Palakkad block by small-holder farming families on 0.5 to 2 acre plots using organic methods without synthetic fertiliser since inorganic nutrition alters the phytochemical balance. GI tag applied. Cooperative marketing through Kerala State Cooperative Marketing Federation with direct supply to Ayurveda hospitals and luxury resort spa channels. Export to USA Ayurvedic practitioners and NRI health food market.
