Kavant Tribal Fair: Holi Celebration of Narmada
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
The Kavant tribal fair in Narmada district is one of Gujarat's largest Adivasi cultural gatherings, held during Holi (February-March). Tribal communities from across Chhota Udaipur, Narmada, Vadodara, and MP walk or travel by tractor-cart to converge at Kavant for three days of music, dance, trading, and social interaction. The fair's centrepiece is the tribal Holi celebration with communities dancing to the timli drum and performing the tribal garba in traditional dress. Young men and women use the fair as a marriage market, meeting potential partners under community supervision. Handicrafts, jewellery, traditional medicines, and forest produce are traded. Livestock fairs run alongside the cultural programme. The Kavant fair has been documented by film-makers and anthropologists as one of India's most vibrant surviving examples of a traditional tribal gathering economy.
