Brahmin Festival Food Tradition of Namakkal — Puran Poli and Panagam

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Namakkal district's Brahmin communities maintain distinct festival cooking traditions including Puran Poli (a sweet flatbread stuffed with chana dal and jaggery, flavoured with cardamom), prepared for Ugadi and Holi. Another distinctive food is Panagam — a cooling drink made from jaggery, dry ginger, cardamom, and water — served to devotees during summer temple festivals as a prasadam offering and natural electrolyte replenishment. The preparation of these festival foods follows strict ritual protocols: utensils are purified, specific firewood (mango or coconut shell) is used, and cooking is done by senior women of the household. These food traditions maintain community identity across generations despite the dispersal of Namakkal's Brahmin population to urban centres.
