Nadia Nakshi Kantha Quilt Embroidery West Bengal

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Nakshi kantha is a traditional quilted embroidery art of rural Bengal, produced in Nadia, Murshidabad, and Jessore belt communities where women stitch intricate running-stitch patterns onto layers of old saris and dhotis. The name means painted quilt — each kantha tells a visual story through botanical, animal, and mythological motifs stitched in coloured thread on white cotton. Nadia cooperative women societies have revived and commercialised nakshi kantha production for urban fashion and home textile markets. Contemporary kantha blouses, stoles, and jackets have significant export demand in Japan, Europe, and USA. State government West Bengal Kantha Emporium connects cooperative producers with premium buyers. UNESCO and craft NGOs have documented Nadia nakshi kantha as a living textile heritage.
