Mizo Zawlbuk Bachelor Dormitory Community Hall Mizoram
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
The Zawlbuk was the traditional community dormitory and bachelor hall of the Mizo people, found at the centre of every village in pre-colonial Mizoram. Young unmarried men lived in the Zawlbuk, learning warfare, weaving, music, and community values under the guidance of village elders. The building served as a community meeting hall, guest house, and cultural school. Zawlbuk architecture used split bamboo walls, thatched roof, and central fire pit, built communally by the entire village. Though the institution declined with Christianity and colonial administration, Mizoram now celebrates Zawlbuk as a symbol of communal identity. Revival programmes teach young Mizo the traditions formerly transmitted in this space.
