Madurai and surrounding Dindigul district are major centres of stainless steel utensil manufacturing in South India. Cooperative workshops produce traditional Tamil thali plates, kavarcchi layered tiffin carriers, and idli steaming vessels in food-grade stainless steel. Craftworkers cut steel sheet blanks, spin them on lathe chucks into bowl shapes, weld handles, and polish surfaces to mirror finish. Madurai steel cooperative society members buy raw coil steel collectively to negotiate bulk prices. Products are sold through Madurai Cooperative Wholesale Stores and retail in weekly markets across Tamil Nadu. Several cooperatives have adopted laser-cut decorative patterns on plates and tiffin boxes for export to Tamil diaspora markets in Singapore, Malaysia, and UK.
